Landings are some of the most underused spaces in our homes. They’re often treated as an area to simply pass through rather than somewhere to spend any length of time in.

But all of that can change. With some clever additions to your space, you can turn your neglected landing into a destination. From eye-catching walls to stylish seating and functional storage solutions, there’s an idea to suit every home.

Whether your landing is tiny or so big that you don’t know what to do with it, we’ll show you how to get the most from your space with these stunning decorating ideas.

1. Go Neutral

Neutral colours are brilliant for enhancing the sense of space – and perfect for landings where you may not benefit from lots of natural light. A neutral palette offers a timeless look that’ll never go out of style.

Decorate your landing walls with on-trend beige to bring warmth to your space. For an extra cosy vibe, add texture with a neutral carpet, fluffy rug and pampas plumes or dried flowers.

2. Transform an Awkward Corner

If you have space on your landing that you’re unsure what to do with, think about whether you could use it as a home office or a place for hair and make-up.

Transforming an awkward corner into a functional space is a fantastic way to make your home work harder for you. And let’s face it, today, we all need that flexibility more than ever.

Add a small desk and chair to turn your landing into a multifunctional area. If a piece of freestanding furniture won’t work for your space, you could create a corner desk by using a countertop.

3. Painted Doors

When adding colour to your space, think beyond the walls. Painting your landing doors can give your home a bold and playful vibe – and it’s an easy and affordable way to refresh tired-looking doors.

If you want your decor to pack a punch, try painting your doors an uplifting hue like pink or yellow. If you’re a fan of neutrals but crave a little drama, paint your doors, frames and skirting boards black or dark grey to create contrast against light walls.

4. Gallery Wall

A gallery wall is a fabulous opportunity to showcase your personality and add a pop of colour to your space. To make a really big impact, take your gallery wall up your staircase and to the top of your walls. It’s a brilliant way to add height to your space and unite your hallway and landing.

Have fun using prints of different sizes, different coloured frames small mirrors, wall hangings or accessories. Try to choose some pieces that have small accents of the same colour pallet to create a cohesive look.

5. Comfy Seating

STYLE THE CLUTTER

Make your space a destination by adding some gorgeous seating. Imagine a cosy window seat where you can curl up with a book or simply sit and watch the world go by. Bliss.

Make the most of your space by adding comfy seating to your landing. If you have room by a window, build a window seat to maximise your storage options.

Alternatively, look for a stylish accent chair to spice up your décor. And if you have empty wall space, why not add some bookshelves for another attractive feature?

6. Paint Your Woodwork

Sometimes we become blind to our woodwork. It’s something we see every day but mightn’t take much notice of. And dare I say, that’s because it’s not exciting.

But, paint your woodwork a different colour, and you suddenly have a completely different space. It accentuates your home’s features and reinvigorates your décor.

Paint your spindles, bannister, skirting boards and door frames. Complement neutral walls with deep grey, navy or black woodwork for contrast.

7. Accessorise

Decorate your landing with a range of accessories for an eclectic, boho look. This beautiful landing embraces a neutral colour pallet, but the choice of accessories adds an abundance of texture with a furry throw, woven accessories and black-framed prints.

Choose a mix of artwork and wall hangings to create visual interest on your landing. Then add houseplants on your floor, shelving or window ledges. If your landing is wide enough, you could even add a small bench for extra style and a handy place to perch.

8. Plant Shelves

Houseplants have the power to make any space come alive. In a neutral scheme, they bring a pop of energising colour and plenty of visual interest.

Create a fresh and calming landing area by adding a variety of houseplants. Look for stylish plant stands to fill empty corners and draw the eye up by placing some of your houseplants on floating shelves. It’s a clever way to enhance the feeling of space in any home.

9. Hang a Mirror

If you have a narrow or dark landing, a mirror is a quick and easy way to brighten up your space. Depending on the style you choose, you can make a big transformation on a small budget, too.

Look for a large mirror and hang it opposite a window or door to reflect the maximum amount of light. A black-framed window mirror will give your home a stylish, industrial look, while an ornate gold frame will add glamour to any home.

10. Fun With Colour

Because people don’t spend too much time on the landing, it’s a great place to experiment with colours and patterns you mightn’t normally use.

This sweet pastel scheme brings all the good vibes with a mix of colours like pink, yellow and green and gorgeous floral-patterned wallpaper.

Have fun with your landing deco by mixing some bright complimentary colours.

Think about painting the upper and lower house of your walls in different colours, adding a patterned wallpaper, or even painting your door frames and skirting boards a bold colour. Complete the look with some colourful accessories where you can, such as planters, vases, and dried flowers.

11. Statement Carpet

Leopard print carpet? Why not! A statement carpet is a brilliant way to create an eye-catching feature in your home, and it’s an excellent opportunity to have a little fun with design.

Introduce a pattern to your landing with a bold carpet – imagine colourful stripes, monochrome polka dots or animal print. If you’re being brave with your print, keep your walls simple and neutral so as not to overpower your space.

12. Console Table

A slim console table is a brilliant way to decorate a small landing area. It can offer space for a table lamp to provide ambient lighting, as well as space for accessories, house plants, and fresh flowers.

Fill an empty corner if you’re landing with a stylish console table. Look for one with a built-in drawer or two to provide extra storage for the bits and pieces you don’t want lying around the home.

For a cohesive design, look for something that compliments the rest of your interior. For example, match white woodwork into us with a white consul table. But if you want to make a builder statement, add glitz and glamour to your landing with a gold baroque-style table.

13. Timeless Panelling

Want to add character and visual interest to your landing? Enter, panelling! A half-wall of panelling can completely transform your space - and with a range of options, it needn’t cost the earth either.

Add a dado rail and panel the lower half of your walls using simple decorative moulding. Then, how you style it is up to you! Paint your entire space a neutral shade for a fresh look with subtle texture. Or, for a bold design, paint your panelling a rich hue and pair it with an eye-catching patterned wallpaper.

14. Statement Lighting

Landings tend to have more height than other areas of the home, so it’s the perfect place to hang that sparkling statement light you’ve always dreamed of. The right lighting will enhance your décor and make a beautiful feature you can enjoy every day.

Create a glamorous centrepiece on your landing with a glitzy chandelier. Or, if you want to add a pop of colour, look for a colourful glass pendant light.

15. Use a Rug

This may be one of the simplest ideas, but a beautiful new rug can help you transform your landing without needing to rethink your whole décor. Plus, if you have solid floors, it’ll offer warmth and help prevent your space from feeling echoey.

To enhance a boho home, look for a rustic jute or cosy Berber-style rug to dress your space. You could also use a rug to introduce an accent colour to your landing décor – colourful Persian rugs are great for complementing characterful period homes.

How Do You Decorate a Narrow Landing?

Decorate a narrow landing by choosing paint that enhances your space. Think light and bright colours like neutrals or pastels for your walls, or create a striking focal point by colour blocking.

How Do You Style a Small Landing?

It’s a good idea to hang a mirror to reflect light and give the illusion of a bigger space. Wall art is also a great way to make a feature and draw the eye up, making a landing feel larger. Even if you have a small landing, you can add a slimline table or ladder shelving to create visual interest in your space.
