Even though a supportive sofa can help you to sit comfortably, if you experience persistent back pain you should discuss this with a medical professional.

There was a time where I would completely avoid my living room. Not because it didn’t look good, but because every time I sat on my sofa I’d find myself constantly shifting, squirming, getting up, laying down and doing everything I possibly could to find comfort.
I didn’t have this same problem on my sisters couch, which made me start to realise how much of an impact the wrong seat, cushions and frame can have. A supportive sofa should allow you to sit comfortably, while your back is naturally supported by the cushion, without constantly forcing you to change your posture.
While looking for the best sofas for back support, I spent a lot of time researching and testing them, while also getting feedback from customers and our readers, who have lived with some of these sofas.
How We Choose Sofas That Provide Back Support
We decide which sofas provide the best back support by narrowing down the best options on the market based on construction quality and seat dimensions. We then either test them in showrooms or gather long-term feedback directly from customers or our readers, who have lived with these sofas for long enough to have an honest opinion around performance and comfort. If we can't find enough long-term feedback, the sofa doesn't make the list.

What Makes a Sofa Good for Back Support
Before we get into our picks, it's important for you to understand what to look for so you can avoid sofas that look good but won’t provide the support you need. If you want a more detailed breakdown, see our guide on how to choose a sofa.
Seat depth
Seat depth has the biggest impact on your comfort so it’s important to get right. For most adults, a seat depth of around 21 to 24 inches is a good general range, but of course shorter adults may need something even shallower than that while taller adults can probably sit comfortably on something deeper. A good rule of thumb, especially if you’re trying sofas in store, is that you should be able to fully sit back with your feet flat on the floor at roughly a 90-degrees angle.
Seat height
This matters almost as much as seat depth and a standard comfortable range is around 17 to 20 inches. Anything below that makes getting up harder and causes your hips to be lower than your knees leading to slouching, while anything above can prevent your feet from sitting flat on the floor, affecting your posture.
Cushion firmness
Cushion firmness affects how your body sits and sofas with a medium to medium-firm cushion usually provide the best balance of comfort and support, while cushions that are too soft cause your hips to sink encouraging slouching and cushions that are too firm can start to feel uncomfortable.
Cushion fill
Cushion fill is what determines how well the sofa maintains its firmness over time. Sofas that use a foam core cushion usually keep their shape for a lot longer than cushions that use down or feather. Just note that both down and feather cushions can initially feel comfortable, but don’t hold up well and your cushions will eventually start to sink, making it harder for you to sit in a comfortable position without constant fluffing and readjusting.
Suspension
Underneath the cushions, the suspension also plays an important role in how supportive, comfortable and durable your sofa is. Most well-built sofas use sinuous springs, which help distribute body weight evenly across the seat and prevent sagging over time and some higher-end sofas use a traditional system where each spring is tied by hand to create even support across the seat.
Seat angle
This isn’t talked about often but it’s still worth knowing. You’ll notice on your sofa searches that some designs have seats that tilt back slightly, and although this can work for lounging it makes it more difficult for you to sit in an upright position. If you’re looking for back support, then it’s better that you prioritize flatter seats.
Back height
When you sit all the way back on a sofa, the cushion should support your lower back. Sofas with low backrests can make it difficult to stay comfortable, especially if you’re sitting for long periods.
