Halifax-based designer Faye Robinson-Hey has expertly remodelled a traditional Georgian manor house into a contemporary luxury home.

Maintaining the home’s unique character and paying tribute to its Georgian history was key in this transformation. The manor house retained its vast open spaces, high ceilings and intricate features. Meanwhile, a combination of natural materials with clean finishes and contemporary furnishings were used to create a modern yet classic look.

Faye said: “The client’s brief for this project was a monochromatic colour scheme, but we’ve warmed that up throughout with the introduction of natural woods, brass accents and soft lighting.”

This incredible renovation begins in the grand hallway, where the traditional L-shaped staircase has been replaced with a curved white staircase to complement the existing archways. In Faye’s expert opinion, the current trend towards curves and organic forms is here to stay and was the perfect fit for this house.

Soft, warm lighting illuminates each step, which gives the entrance room an inviting atmosphere, encouraging visitors into the heart of the home.

A combination of panelling and chunky wall mouldings has been added throughout the home to create a consistent flow with timeless elegance.

Leading off the hallway is the newly extended lounge, now full of natural light. To add contrast to the white walls and create a focal point in such a large room, Faye installed a bespoke oversized black marble fireplace.

A custom-built shelving unit with linen backing fills one wall of the room, allowing the client to display sentimental ornaments and family photos without looking cluttered or disorganised.

Sliding pocket doors allow the lounge to be cosy and private, with the option of an open-plan space flowing into the dining room with a bespoke bar area.

Referring to the bar’s unusual design, Faye explains: “We wanted to take inspiration from the archways in the hallway, and these curves give the bar a nice softness.”

The dining table and bar counter flow together with beautiful white marble tops, while the front of the bar is cladded with fluted oak to add an interesting texture to the space. Continuing with the natural theme, the walls have a simple oak cladding – custom-dyed to match the fluting.

Heading into the office, a unique decagonal space with a stunning high glass ceiling awaits. Black cabinetry with a bronze backdrop and soft lighting display the client’s accessories. The existing oversized brass chandelier has been updated with simple black shades to tie in with the shelving.

Moving into the newly created kitchen extension, the same wooden flooring flows through from the hallway and lounge to seamlessly integrate the new addition to the building. The client wanted two islands, and handmade cabinetry in a soft grey colour scheme contrasts the liquid metal cladding on the sideboard.

When asked which is her favourite room in the house, Faye gushes over the guest bathroom without hesitation. “With guest bathrooms, you have a really good opportunity to go for a bold, dramatic scheme. It’s the one room that usually is tucked away, but it’s the one area that all your guests are going to see.”

The walls and ceiling are painted fully black to give a dramatic, moody atmosphere. In contrast, the toilet cubicle is cladded in floor-to-ceiling mirror, which gives a double reflection with the sink mirror and conceals the toilet door. Marble floor tiles and a solid marble basin fit the client’s brief to create a modern, monochromatic home.

Upstairs in the master bedroom, Faye has removed an existing wall of full-height wardrobes to open up the generous space. The client asked for a luxury bedroom suite, so another sweeping, organic staircase has been added, leading up to a new dressing area.

She explains: “The client wanted to implement a Parisian-chic vibe, so we’ve gone with a new marble fireplace with a pretty baroque-influenced design which ties in with the pendants, ceiling rose and new coving.”

LED lighting gently displays the floral moulding around the edge of the ceiling, in keeping with the original Georgian grandeur of the house.

Making good use of the space available in the master bedroom, a bespoke, oversized headboard has been custom-made to frame the bed and side tables. It’s wrapped in soft boucle fabric to give a natural feel to this relaxing space.

Taking a step back to admire the home as a whole concept, it’s clear how much consideration has been put into keeping the character of the original Georgian structure. Faye has expertly blended traditional features with modern design techniques to create a lavish home with timeless style.
